Debut solo 45 for RK by GIZELLE SMITHPublished on Mercoledì, 18 Novembre 2009
In the past weeks things have gained momentum for the new "it" girl of funk Gizelle Smith. Her first single "Working Woman" was an overnight smash and a prime-time club favorite of funk & soul DJs worldwide, attracting the attention of legendary producer Kenny Dope who even did a remix of the track for his Kay Dee label. The recent release of a full-length album with Hamburg-based label and group The Mighty Mocambos only confirmed what many suspected all along: Gizelle's groove is right up there with the hippest female singers in the deep funk underground. We are therefore thrilled to present the first 45 this charismatic soulstress has recorded for Record Kicks, entitled " June", a refreshing alternative to post-millenium plastic pop without being a mere retro rip-off, as it is just as deeply rooted in the music from the golden era of soul as it is a modern masterpiece in its own right. In a genre which is often littered with overused cliches of the past, Gizelle Smith adds a lot of her own flavor rather than slavishly copying icons of bygone decades. "June" is a fantastically funky track that perfectly showcases the gripping and powerful voice of Gizelle, and the B side sees Tru Thoughts producer TM Juke add a layer of drums to make the song even more badass. With such strong and heavy vibes we challenge you not to move to this catchy tune!

“A side is a very nice new funk tune that lifts when the keys play ,this tune grows with each play . The flip is a porn funk jam style tune with "get up "chant. Another nice 45 release from Record Kicks that will be collectable in a few years down the line” – Smoove (Jalapeno / Wack Records)
