Exactly one month ahead of the release of their new album “Ellroy vs L.A.”, due on October 9, Calibro 35 release their new single “Vacation and Probation”, a gripping blend of crime-funk, psychedelia and cinematic tension, available today on all digital platforms. Following “Riots” and “L.A. Confidential”, the track is the third single taken from the original soundtrack composed by the band for “Ellroy vs L.A.”, Francesco Zippel’s documentary, produced by Quoiat Films, about acclaimed American noir writer James Ellroy and the city of Los Angeles.
“Los Angeles is not a city for the faint of heart. It’s a city of extremes, and Vacation and Probation, one of the most overtly cinematic tracks on this soundtrack, tries to hold those extremes together by moving between a more retro sound and a more contemporary one, because noir never goes out of style,” the band explains.
Winner of Italy’s prestigious Nastro d’Argento Critics’ Award, “Ellroy vs L.A.” explores the life, work and mythology of legendary crime writer James Ellroy and his dark, obsessive vision of Los Angeles. The soundtrack sees Calibro 35 immersing themselves in Ellroy’s universe, resulting in twelve tracks that blend cinematic crime-funk, psychedelia and hypnotic grooves. Rather than simply accompanying the story, these compositions inhabit it.
The “Ellroy vs L.A.” tour will kick off on September 24, with dates in Italy in Turin, Mestre, Rome, Cagliari, Bergamo, Milan and Genoa, alongside a series of European shows in London (November 4), Madrid (November 6), Ljubljana (December 4), Belgrade (December 5) and Zagreb (December 6), with additional dates to be announced soon.
For this unique live production, Calibro 35 will perform in continuous dialogue with the film’s imagery. The visual backdrop will combine excerpts from James Ellroy’s interviews, archival footage of Los Angeles and specially created visuals, while the band performs selections from the soundtrack alongside carefully chosen highlights and deep cuts from their celebrated catalogue.
The release of “Ellroy vs L.A.” and the upcoming European tour mark another milestone in Calibro 35’s ongoing journey. Over the years, the band has established itself as a leading force on the international scene thanks to their distinctive ability to merge music for the screen, experimentation and cinematic grooves into a unique and unmistakable musical language.
